What is "It's OKAY not to be OKAY" ?
It’s okay, not to be okay was started in 2016 by three grieving sisters who lost their brother Ben to suicide. It’s okay not to be okay is a registered charity that’s mission is to advocate and create change in mental health, grief and suicide prevention. They do this by running community events and providing gift packs for those bereaved by suicide, running social media campaigns through all platforms that increase mental health literacy and raising awareness about the support available.
They also fund counselling sessions for those who might need help but not be able to afford to do so. They encourage people to wear our message which reduces stigma, starts conversations and normalises seeking help for your mental health.
Why are we doing it ?
Tiarne and Pete came up with the idea at the end of April 2024 when we decided to give the Shitbox Rally a try, with communitypete’s exposure, we tried to push the organizers to accept our late entry but were denied. Undeterred, we decided to create our own event, leading to the charity drive’s inception of which we had only 3 months to pull it together.
Our next challenge was choosing a worthy charity. After many hours of research, we selected “It’s OKAY not to be OKAY.” We had some rules to follow: the car had to be over 20 years old and cost no more than $2000. Additionally, since we were both bringing our kids, it needed to be a 7-seater. We eventually found a suitable car on Facebook Marketplace in Morwell, Victoria. Pete took the VLine train down and picked up the car, a 1998 Mitsubishi Nimbus, which we nicknamed “Blink and you’ll miss it” due to its surprising speed.
Once the green beast made it back home, we cleaned and prepped it for our drive. We had our logos cut in vinyl and applied them to the car, making it stand out. We also did an online shout-out for sponsors, and for each one, we had vinyls made and placed them all over the car.
This cause hits close to home for us especially Tiarne & Monny who lost one of their family friends, (Harry) to suicide in 2022.
